Rolling Into Safety: TSU Students Join National Night Out.

A Night of Safety, Skates, and Fun

By: Laurin Starr

Texas Southern University students laced up their skates and rolled out with purpose as they teamed up with the TSU Police Department for this year’s National Night Out—a community-building event centered on safety, unity, and an evening of fun on wheels.

Held right on campus, the event blended music, movement, and meaningful conversations. Students glided across the pavement while officers joined in, creating a relaxed space where safety tips flowed just as smoothly as the skaters.

The TSU Police Department used the celebration as an opportunity to connect with students and share practical advice for staying safe—especially while enjoying popular campus pastimes like skating, biking, and scootering. Officers offered guidance on protective gear, visibility at night, and staying aware of surroundings, reinforcing how small habits can make a big difference.

For many students, the event was more than just a safety lesson—it was a chance to strengthen ties with campus officers. Smiles, high-fives, and shared laps around the rink-like setup helped break down barriers and build trust.

“Events like this help us feel seen and supported,” said one student attendee. “It’s cool to have fun and still learn something that could protect us.”

National Night Out at TSU highlighted what community policing can look like at its best: students and officers coming together, not in crisis, but in celebration. With music playing, wheels spinning, and conversations sparking, the evening proved that safety doesn’t have to be serious—it can roll right alongside joy.

As the night wrapped up, students skated away with new memories, new knowledge, and a renewed sense of connection. At Texas Southern University, rolling into safety has never looked so good.
